Seven Comal ISD Students Participated in 2022 Lone Star Leadership Academy Camps

Sept. 13, 2022 - Seven students represented the Comal Independent School District this summer in Education in Action’s summer 2022 Lone Star Leadership Academy camps for fourth through eighth-grade students. Nominated by an educator, these students demonstrated leadership ability, academic success and showed involvement in school/community activities.

Annually, students from across the state participate in the weeklong, overnight camps, where to learn about Texas and visit notable and historically significant sites such as the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, the Perot Museum, the Texas State Capitol, the Alamo and the San Jacinto Battleground Monument.

This marked the third Lone Star Leadership Academy camp for Katherine Threm who represented Church Hill Middle School and attended the Houston/Galveston camp this summer with three of her friends. She has enjoyed the opportunity to learn science and Texas history through these camps while improving her self-confidence, public-speaking and leadership skills.

The Houston/Galveston camp included the Lone Star Flight Museum, NASA and a dolphin tour, and Kynadi Britt, who also represented CHMS, said her favorite part of the camp was working in teams to complete a simulated space mission. She is grateful to CHMS librarian Vanessa Schwab for nominating her.

Dominic Appleby represented Bill Brown Elementary and attended the Dallas/Fort Worth camp. He enjoyed rolling around on the turf of the Dallas Cowboys stadium and learning the history of the Fort Worth Stockyards. He hopes to attend the Austin/San Antonio camp next summer.

This summer’s camp marked the second for Trent Fagala, who represented Pieper Ranch Middle School at the Austin/San Antonio camp. He attended the Dallas/Fort Worth camp last summer, and he hopes to attend one more next summer. His favorite part of this summer’s camp was visiting the state Capitol and meeting Texas State Senator Donna Campbell.

The leadership camps have given him a better understanding of Texas history along with the confidence to be a become a strong leader.

The Lone Star Leadership Academy experience provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students to learn about Texas leaders and what it means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem-solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills.
